This year, smartphones Nokia are returning. Even more, these are Nokia smartphones on the “pure” Android 7.1, and as promised in the company HMD, which now owns the brand, they will have a competitive price. At the MWC, I was able to look at the entire line of Nokia smartphones, which will be presented in Ukraine. In HMD, it is planned that these will be models: Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6.
The youngest model in the line of Nokia reminds a little of Lumia smartphones. In Nokia 3, the body is also made of polycarbonate, for more rigidity, an aluminum frame is used, and the display covers the glass, which is rounded at the edges. The camera unit is also implemented in a similar style: a lens of the camera and a flash are inscribed in the glass panel with rounded corners.
But designers only imitate continuity, because it is not the Nokia that was 5 years ago. HMD certainly want to remind customers about the glorious past of the Nokia brand, but at the same time, we need to move on and create our recognizable design.
Nokia 3 is well in the hand, but the case dimensions are relatively large, as for the 5-inch model, they are 143.4 × 71.4 × 8.5 mm. Blame for this, of course, the thick frames around the display, which is expected from the entry-level model.
On the Nokia 3 case, you can find a microUSB connector for charging, and also 3.5 mm for connecting headphones. On the right side of the case is the volume key, as well as the power button. Under the screen, you can find the touch navigation keys. Unfortunately, they are not highlighted. In HMD also saved on a fingerprint scanner, it’s not in the smartphone.
To judge the quality of the Nokia 3 assembly, based on samples at the exhibition stand, it is too early. But given that the production is engaged in Foxconn, you can count on a good assembly.
The 5-inch IPS display of the smartphone has a resolution of 1280×720 pixels and in it it is worth highlighting only the polarization layer, which will not allow it to fade strongly under direct sun. Otherwise, this is an unremarkable matrix.
The same can be said for the platform on which Nokia 3 was built. In HMD, a 4-core 28-nanometer-wide MediaTek MTK6737 processor was used, operating at 1.3 GHz. It’s a budget chip with Mali-T720MP2 graphics, but with LTE support, which can be useful in the future or when traveling abroad. Complement the processor 2 GB of operational and 16 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded with microSD cards even up to 128 GB. Despite not the most advanced features, Nokia 3 is quite fast, and here it is worth to thank HMD for refusing its own shell for Android. That’s right, the global versions of the company’s smartphones will ship with a “clean” Android 7.1. Thus, not even the fastest processor and 2 GB of RAM do not seem very critical when working with the Nokia 3 interface.
The battery in the smartphone is not removable, its capacity is 2640 mAh. Given the other characteristics, this should be enough for 1-1.5 days of use at an average load. But it will be more accurate to say after full testing. The main camera in the smartphone is an 8-megapixel camera with a f / 2.0 diaphragm, a matrix with pixels 1.12 microns in size. The front camera has the same characteristics, only the other lens with a viewing angle of 84 degrees. At first impression, the camera makes pictures typical for this price category.
And, by the way, if we talk about the price, the cost of Nokia in Europe is set at 139 euros excluding taxes.
The design of the middle model of the new line of Nokia also originates from the Lumia smartphones. Nokia 5 also uses the rounded edges of the case and 2.5D glass, which slightly protrudes from the front panel.
On the back of the smartphone you can find the camera lens and flash. The main material of the body of Nokia 5 is aluminum, the whole back part is made of it. The dimensions of the device are 149.7 × 72.5 × 8.55 mm, and it is slightly larger than Nokia 3 due to the diagonal of the display, which reaches 5.2 inches. Frames around the screen at the same time can also be called large, as by modern standards.
And if on the sides they do not carry any functional load, then the display contains touch navigation keys, as well as a fingerprint scanner. In general, I liked the Nokia 5 design better than not, but it can not be called original.
As already mentioned above, the smartphone has a 5.2-inch screen. It uses an IPS matrix with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, there is a polarization layer and a mode of increased brightness. Against the backdrop of the younger model, the Nokia 5 display seems more colorful, it has better viewing angles.
The smartphone has a 28-nanometer 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor running at 1.4 GHz. The video accelerator Adreno 505 is responsible for graphics processing. Despite the technical process, this platform is quite fresh, and the performance is slightly faster than Snapdragon 615/616. The amount of RAM Nokia 5 is 2 GB, built-in – 16 GB with the ability to expand up to 128 GB using a microSD card. Performance smartphone should be enough for everyday tasks, as well as most games. And since the standard interface of Android 7.1 is used, there is no problem with the speed of its operation.
The volume of the built-in Nokia 5 battery is 3000 mAh, while the Snapdragon 430 supports the Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging standard, but the HMD does not specify whether it is implemented in this model.
The main camera in Nokia 5 is 13-megapixel with f / 2.0 aperture, a matrix with pixels of 1.12 microns and a dual LED flash. The front 8-megapixel camera has the same set of features, except for the flash. Despite the higher resolution of the main camera, in my first impression, it shoots just like in the younger Nokia 3.
The cost of Nokia 5 without taxes is set at 189 euros.
The older smartphone in Nokia’s new lineup is the least like the company’s old smartphones. Initially, the device was developed for the Chinese market, where its sales started, apparently the designers created it taking into account the preferences of Chinese consumers. But, anyway, the live device looks good.
It has more sharp edges of the body, but at the same time it is metal with elegantly hidden antenna stripes. The front panel is covered with a 2.5D glass Gorilla Glass, which protrudes from the body and smoothly passes into its faces. The sale will receive several colors and options for finishing the case. There will even be a glossy black version in the style of the iPhone 7 Jet Black with all the disadvantages of such coverage.
Dimensions of Nokia 6 with diagonal display 5.5 inches are only slightly larger than other models of the ruler, they are 154.0 × 75.8 × 7.85 mm. The frames around the screen here are slightly smaller. The location of controls is the same as in Nokia 5, there is a fingerprint scanner.
But there is also an important difference from the younger version, Nokia has installed two external speakers: one is on the lower edge, and the second is combined with the spoken one.
The 5.5-inch IPS display Nokia 6 has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, it has good viewing angles and a colorful clear picture. This screen is nice to use.
The platform in Nokia 6 is the same as in Nokia 5 – Snapdragon 430, only the amount of RAM is 3 GB, and the built-in – 32 GB with the possibility of expansion by microSD card. Given the Full HD resolution, one might assume that the processor from the younger model will be worse at rendering the interface, but in fact it is not. Lags and slowdowns in a short time with the smartphone, I did not notice, on the contrary, the increased amount of RAM immediately felt. But it would be much more interesting if in Nokia 6 we installed Snapdragon 625 with perfectly optimized power consumption. Given that the battery has a capacity of 3000 mAh, this would not prevent.
The main camera in the Nokia 6 is 16 megapixel with a pixel size of 1 μm, a f / 2.0 aperture, a phase autofocus and a dual LED flash. The front camera is 8-megapixel with the same diaphragm, but 1.12-micron pixels.
The cost of Nokia 6 without taxes is set at 229 euros.
As can be seen from the hardware characteristics, Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 are not noticeable against the background of the mass of other models do not stand out. Smartphones have only two strong features: the Nokia brand, and also the “clean” Android. Will this be enough for good sales? Hardly. After all, we need a competitive price, and we do not know it yet. But I have no doubt that the devices will find their customers exactly, since the Nokia label on the case is just a brand, but Android 7.1 “out of the box”, taking into account the rapid release of all updates, is much more important. To date, with Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Meizu, one of the problems is the stability of the firmware, so those users who are faced with this can pay attention to the new Nokia models, if the HMD can provide an adequate price.
